menossi Being one of his first students in 2009 was already very exciting and special to me.

To meet Giulio Menossi, with his years of experience and his friendly openness to share his knowledge made a great impression on me, so I returned this year to learn more.

Giulio Menossi knows so much about mosaic, the materials, the ancient and modern techniques, colors, shading and it is fascinating to work in his studio whilest looking at some of his most amazing mosaics. His teaching is gentle, yet clear, he is able to motivate you through upcoming difficulties and he never misses to encourage you.

Beside the workshop we spend some time at the ancient mosaic site Aquileia and his explanations made it even more valuable to me. We also went to see the Friulian country side way up to the Dolomites and our tours were always accompanied by excellent Italian or Friulian food and wine and lots of laughter and fun within the group.

All together the course was for me again a very special, exciting and enjoyable treat,
I very much enjoyed the company and I am sure I will return to learn more.

menossiDear Pam and dear Maestro Menossi,

I thank you for the great experience I have received during the portraiture course.

Pam, you have been a wonderful coordinator and organizer. I cannot thank you enough for what you did for us as a group, and for what you did for me in regards to my son.

You were caring, considerate and helpful, asking questions and always checking on the good taking place of the course and on our well-being.

Maestro Menossi, you are a brilliant teacher, your explanations were very clear.

Your patience and your generosity are exemplary.

You have taught me the nuances and the tempo that occur with colors, light and shades on a face. It is the most challenging course I ever had.

Thank you so much,
Sincerely yours,
Audrey Meyer - Munz

menossiWhat can I say about Giulio that hasn't already been said?  I'm impressed with the level of attention that he administers to each student and through that you can see his love for teaching as well as his dedication to the art of mosaic.

Believe me, you would never guess it...he explains things thoroughly, and if you don't get it the first time, he'll explain it again and never complain.

The translator we had was wonderful!  She has the talent to hear Giulio talking, and his words coming out in another language.  I have such deep admiration for Lucia for the job she did, and the new friendship!

Udine May 2010

I need to say, to make mosaic portrait was a really difficult charge and hard work...

But………….

If you´ve got a gentle Maestro who paid attention to you all day long

If you´ve got a  Maestro who checked carefully your working and corrected the smallest piece to make it better

If you´ve got a Maestro who tried to give you  his immeasurable experience

If you´ve got Pam for all arrangements that were needed for exquisite course

If you´ve got Lucia for translating and talking about all art things

If you´ve got nice workmates with a sense of humor

If you´ve got breaks with Italian magnificent coffee and deserts

If you were staying in pleasant Italian hotel

If you could relax during the tour to Acquileia and Grado

If you could spend the evenings with new friends having always a splendid dinner

If you could walk through the pleasant and peaceful centre of Udine

If you´ve got sensational gelato every day………….

I need to say, to make a mosaic portrait was a really amazing and fantastic matter!

340 days more to wait to meet again Maestro Menossi and all his family.

I am hardly back, just a few days, and I have already reserved a place for the next course in Udine with Maestro Giulio Menossi.

The experience, that I have just had in Udine during the 2 weeks, was extraordinary and beyond all my expectations. I was working in this course on “The Kiss” by Klimt with 3 other students.

When I arrived I  discovered that I was the only new student. The others had already done the portrait course in the previous year. It was with a lot of stress that I began to handle the hammer, but Giulio with so much patience helped me gain my confidence.  With a lot of teaching we began with the easiest part… and little by little we encountered the difficulties… which were numerous. There were moments of despair.

But Giulio with so much kindness found the remedy for me to regain my confidence. He knew how to make us benefit from his amazing talent and passion. And I know how lucky I was to work 2 weeks with him.  My “Kiss” is great but when I look at it I think back to all the exchanges that we had during this unforgettable adventure.

Looking back I think I assimilated only 10% of the information given to us by Giulio, on both the choice of colors and the cutting of Smalti.  That’s the reason I am ready to take the course again in the next year!

For anyone who still hesitates, contact me.  In fact this experience also allowed us to discover wonderful Italy. We still need to improve without forgetting the “fun”!

As for the “kiss”, it waits patiently for my personal touch. It will be finished on my return from my vacation. We have homework.

Thank you again Giulio, Pam, Lucia, Rosa, Cecilia, Anne Marie, and my dear friends.

Testimonials
2009

I was very fortunate to have had the opportunity to take Giulio's class in May of 2009.  Not only is he a superb artist, he is an exceptional teacher.  He placed his studio, knowledge, talent, direction, materials, friendship and family at our disposal.  I learned more in that one class than I thought possible.  Giulio's wife, Rosa, his daughter and son made us not only feel welcome, but family.  I told him that I sincerely hoped he would continue to teach, because there are great artists and there are good teachers, but to be exceptional at both is truly a gift.

The class was extremely well structured and planned.  A lot of thought went into its preparation and conduct.  It was seriously informative, yet wonderfully fun and enjoyable.  Anyone who chooses to take this class in the future with Guilio is in for an amazing treat.

One week with a master

Close your eyes and think about a dream, a dream related to your art.

Now imagine it comes true.

A “WOW” feeling, isn’t it?

To put thing in proportions let me tell you this – I’ve never even dared dreaming about a week with Maestro Menossi, not even about a single day with him.

In early November 2008 I got an email from Pam inviting me to participate in a new workshop with Giulio. After I started breathing again I replied a definite “yes”, asked my husband to mark this week in early June 2009 as “Irit is away”, and started dreaming. Do you know how long it is to wait 7 months for a dream to come true? It feels like forever!

31 May, 5 pm. I met Pam for the first time in the lobby of the hotel in Udine (pssst… she looks even better than in the photos…). At 5:05 I forgot already that I haven’t really met her before.

Then all the rest arrived:

Annette Brenner, Karin Wainwright - a bursting fire ball, Mary Denton and her husband, Cristina Colli, Jacqueline Iskandar, who for a moment was “unglued” to her camera, and Ruth Wunsh.

About 2 hours later we walked to Giulio’s studio. Giulio was waiting there for us with his shy smile. His wife was there too and a huge table loaded with goodies. It was the first time in my life I was surrounded with masterpieces so close to me. I touched them. We all did. I know we all think that Giulio’s work is fantastic. Well, let me tell you, in real life it’s even better, much better. It makes you feel you have a heart when you are there. It beats crazily.

I can write and talk forever about that week. The amount of excitement we had there is beyond words.

It is two and a half weeks now since I returned home from Giluio’s, and I am still not settled down. I haven’t touched a mosaic since. I am still processing, digesting.

p.s. Don’t worry, I’ll get there, sooner than you think.

Thank you Pam for organizing it and for making me a part of all this. I awe you!!!

I consider myself very lucky to have been on the first ever Menossi course.
This portraiture course was a teaching in the double indirect method.  The day this opportunity was presented to me, I knew, come what may, I was going to be there.

My fellow attendees were the best one could hope for.  We were a very happy class and Giulio, a great teacher. Or first meeting with Giulio was very different from what I expected.  This man is a great master and a true artist and yet, he is a very humble person.

During the lessons, he was always around and this is what I found so different from other courses.  The teaching was done by Giulio himself and he is there 100% of the time.  So, I felt it was very much worth it. Seeing as I have never used a hammer and hardie before, and smalti was something that I had only seen in books, I was quite worried that I may hold the rest of the class back. But, Maestro Menossi’s kind encouragement and instruction ensured that by the end of the course, I was confidant and competent when using my hammer.

The atmosphere in the studio was very relaxed and light. But, it was not all moonshine and roses though, there were times when Giulio ’s tweezers came out and quickly made part of my work disappear, but, then I was patiently explained the why followed by the revelation of the how.  I am very thankful that my first hammer and hardie instruction was with someone who is a true master of the art.  I would recommend this course to anyone who really wants to learn.

I have truly benefited from this experience and have acquired a new skill and met some very nice people who I hope to stay in contact with.  Since I returned from the course, I have been very busy ordering smalti and practicing the new techniques. Thank you to Pam for the opportunity and for making it all possible.

Thank you to Cristina for her translation (although Giulio was picking up English so quickly, he may not need a translator soon), thanks to Jackie who documented everything with the camera that was never far away, and Annette (roomie), Irit, Mary & Tim and Ruth for great laughs and companionship. I will definitely return when I am able.
